Over the past couple of weeks, we have seen an escalation in tensions between Boulaye Dia and Salernitana, all stemming from the Serie A club’s decision to reject an offer for Wolverhampton Wanderers late last summer.
The latest in this saga, which culminated in the player refusing to come off the bench at the end of a game, is his club asking for €20m in damages because of breach of contract.
Whether they get it remains to be seen, but the club’s owner, Danilo Iervolino, touched on the situation in an interview with Corriere dello Sport on Thursday, acknowledging the offer from Wolves in the process.
The Italian was asked about the situation currently unfolding at his club, and said: “He is our highest paid player, the third top scorer of last season’s Serie A. It’s likely that he wanted to leave in the summer, but we received no offer except one for a loan. He refused to go on the pitch: it’s unacceptable.”
Therefore, we have to wait and see what comes from all this, but the bottom line appears to be that he will not be featuring for Salernitana again this season.
Whether that benefit Wolves in the long run remains to be seen, but it’s clear that their offer of a loan with an option to buy, deemed almost insulting by the Serie A side at the time, has caused a lot of problems.
