With 17 goals conceded in eight Premier League appearances in Lukasz Fabianksi’s absence, it’s fair to say Roberto Jiménez Gago, or Roberto for short, didn’t leave a great impression on the London Stadium faithful.

The 33-year-old goalkeeper wasn’t exactly a great help, eventually dropped for David Martin, and was then loaned out to Alavés for the rest of the season.

The news was received with thunderous applause (probably) in certain parts of east London, and there’s even more good news if you aren’t a big fan of the veteran, as a couple of sources in Spain are suggesting he might not return to West Ham.

GasteizHoy explain Alavés’ director of football, Sergio Fernández, ‘has been delighted with the attitude and ways of the goalkeeper’, and ‘could count on him for next year if West Ham let him go for free’.

AlianzaNews.com also mention that, explaining he could continue with the La Liga club ‘if both parties so agree’.

Roberto’s contract with West Ham is set to expire in June 2021, meaning he would still have a year left on his deal come the end of the season, but considering the Premier League club brought him in on a free from Espanyol, they might not be against just cutting ties 12 months early if it suits everyone.
