While Newcastle United and Lyon were negotiating for the transfer of Bruno Guimarães, they weren’t only the two clubs who were concerned about the numbers involved.
Athletico Paranaense, who sold the midfielder to the French side back in 2020, would also get a share of the transfer, and their fans are now pretty happy with what happened.
As reported by Globo Esporte, when Lyon bought the player for €20m a couple of years ago, they announced that the Brazilian club would get 20% from the profit of a future transfer.
Now it turns out that when confirming the sale to Newcastle United, the French revealed that Athletico actually have the right of 20% of the entire amount.
So with Newcastle paying €42.1m for Bruno Guimarães, Athletico are actually getting €8.42m, which is ‘twice as large’ as what their fans were expecting.
The midfielder is currently in international duty with Brazil, having made the medicals ahead of the Newcastle move still in his home country.
He’s set to play against Paraguay on Tuesday night and then finally travel to England.
