Ben Godfrey joined Sheffield United on loan from Atalanta in the summer.
The transfer could have provided a real spark for the struggling defender’s career. The ex-Everton player hadn’t settled well in Italy and couldn’t make a mark on loan at Ipswich Town either.
So far at Sheffield United, the 27-year-old has played four Championship games. All four appearances came early in the season. Since then, he’s been missing from the Blades’ first-team completely.
L’Eco di Bergamo now claim that Godfrey should return to Atalanta in January.
They describe the versatile defender as a ‘true mystery’. This is because personal reasons behind his constant exclusion from the Sheffield United side remain undisclosed.
On top of that, he has barely showed any glimpses of quality since arriving in Italy.
Due to his Sheffield United struggles, he’s expected to leave the Championship club when the transfer window reopens.
Even at Ipswich Town in the second half of last season, Godfrey played only five times in all competitions.
The Englishman’s contract at Atalanta runs until 2028. This could make a permanent exit from the Bergamo club quite difficult in the next few months.
