Despite having just become a father, Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimarães still played at the weekend, helping the Magpies in their 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur.

So when speaking to ESPN Brasil after the match, the 24-year-old obviously had something to say about that situation, talking about his choice to play. He explained that his relationships with his teammates and manager were crucial for him to play that match.

“It’s been a week, to be honest, difficult, but the best of my life at the same time,” Bruno Guimarães told ESPN Brasil’s Natali Gedra, getting teary during the interview.

“It’s been two sleepless days since the Everton game. But everything has been so good for me, living my dreams, being a father for the first time, it’s all been very good for me.

“Talking about the son, right, it’s difficult, the first time. Difficult. Cool, great. It was always a wish, a dream. I could have stayed at home, but I decided to play, I’m proud of the guys, they’ve always been very nice to me, the coach as well. I feel at home. Last time I felt like this was at Athletico-PR. It’s nice. I had a difficult time at Lyon, but here I’m very happy. It was worth the effort.”

Still speaking of how glad he is to be at Newcastle United, Bruno Guimarães hopes his good form at the club helps him to get a spot in Brazil’s squad for the World Cup in Qatar.

“I’m very happy here at Newcastle, they treat me like an idol, I hit a sideways pass and they’re already going crazy, it’s very cool. It’s thanks to my effort on the field. I have a big goal for the World Cup. If I’m there, it will be the best moment of my career.”

Bruno Guimarães also talked about Newcastle’s future, saying this squad has been building something big for the club to fight for titles in the coming years.

“We have to think big, yes, but the future will be even more beautiful for Newcastle. To build the future, you have to build the present, we are doing that. I believe the coming seasons will be Newcastle’s. It’s nice what we’re doing, but it’s just the beginning. For what we’re doing so far, we deserve congratulations.”

Following the win over Tottenham, the Magpies now prepare to play Aston Villa at St. James’ Park on Saturday.

Bruno was barely used in Brazil’s most recent games, so he must show a lot in England in the coming weeks to confirm his spot at the World Cup.
