Stade Rennais’ Albert Grønbæk has been on loan at Southampton since January and his future beyond this season needs to be clarified.

The forward has failed to score or register an assist from four Premier League games for the Saints.

Grønbæk’s performances for Southampton haven’t put off Marseille from looking at him for the summer window. That’s according to Coeur Marseillais, who say Roberto De Zerbi’s side are monitoring the 23-year-old closely.

Southampton have secured a €15m purchase option, but this clause may be useless.

Last week, we covered claims from France which stated the English club are unlikely to exercise this clause.

Coeur Marseillais now backs it up because Southampton risk being relegated from the top division. They are currently at the bottom of the table and are 17 points behind 17th placed Wolverhampton Wanders with nine games left this season.

Marseille are considering taking advantage of Southampton’s situation to try and sign the Denmark international. They have to find an agreement with their Ligue 1 counterpart to close the operation.

It’s unclear where Grønbæk will play next season, but it’s most likely to be away from Southampton.
