Goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen has an agreement in principle to join Newcastle United in the summer transfer window.

Journalist Sacha Tavolieri reports that the French goalkeeper has given his agreement to the move to St. James Park, after visiting Newcastle’s facilities two weeks ago.

Newcastle United deal advancing

Tavolieri reports that the plan is Ewen Jaouen to compete with Newcastle’s number one goalkeeper next season. The Magpies are in talks with his club, Reims, over a €20m deal plus bonuses for the 20-year-old.

Jaouen joined the French side in 2023, initially going into their B team after coming through the youth system at EA Guingamp.

He’s since spent time away from the club on loan at Rodez AF and USL Dunkerque, before returning to Reims in June last year.

He’s now their number one goalkeeper, featuring in 35 games in Ligue 2 this season. That’s seen him conceded 35 and keep 15 clean sheets. He’s played in 100% of the available minutes for the French side this season.

He is also well established in the French youth set up. He’s made appearances for their U17s, U18s, U19s, U20s and U21s so far. Transfermarkt currently value him at €4m, so Newcastle would be paying around 5x his current value if this deal were to go through.

Magpies want goalkeeper

The Magpies appear determined to strengthen their goalkeeper options this summer. Nick Pope and Aaron Ramsdale have shared the number one jersey this season. Mark Gillespie and John Ruddy are also options.

But it appears that they are not considered as long-term options by the club. Sport Witness covered a report today linking them to Werder Bremen goalkeeper Mio Backhaus.

They have also been linked to Real Sociedad’s Alex Remiro. It’s clear that they want to sign at least one goalkeeper in the summer transfer window. Now a deal for Jaouen is progressing, although there is no intention for him to be number one yet.
