Tottenham Hotspur‘s Lucas Bergvall is happy to have put a difficult season behind him.
The Premier League side avoided relegation after finishing 17th, two points ahead of 18th placed West Ham United.
In February, Tottenham parted ways with Frank Lampard and appointed Igor Tudor as his successor.
They showed the Croatian the exit door the following month, after losing four of five league matches.
Roberto De Zerbi took charge in March and helped Spurs stay in the top flight. The English club picked up 11 points from seven matches under the Italian.
De Zerbi didn’t count on Swede at Tottenham
The former Marseille boss didn’t utilise Lucas Bergvall regularly towards the end of the season. The Sweden international played 113 minutes from five matches and the coach left him on the bench for the last two matches of this season.
The 20-year-old is now with the national team squad, preparing for the World Cup and spoke to Fotbollskanalen.
When asked how Roberto De Zerbi justified his decision to not utilise him regularly, he said: “I trust that he will field the best team to win the matches. I’m glad we made it.
“It’s been a tough season for me and the team, with injuries and so on. It’s nice to turn the page and focus on the World Cup.”
The player was asked how he feels now that the manager will stay at Tottenham.
“He’s done well. He’s one of the reasons we’re still in the league. It’s clear that he’ll stay. It was only a few games [that Bergvall was on bench],” Bergvall explained.
Bergvall on Tottenham future
Two months ago, Sport Witness relayed news former Spurs sporting director Fabio Paratici is keen on taking Lucas Bergvall to his current club, Fiorentina.
Fotbollskanalen make no mention of any club but asked the midfielder whether he’s thinking of leaving Tottenham Hotspur this summer.
Responding to that, he added: “It’s not something I’m focusing on right now. It’s been a tough season, as I said. But now the focus is on the World Cup and being here.”
In April 2025, the youngster extended his contract until 2031 and Transfermarkt value him at €35m.
