More than two months after sacking José Mourinho, Tottenham Hotspur are yet to appoint a successor to the Portuguese tactician.
On Wednesday, Sevilla president José Castro Carmona revealed Julen Lopetegui called him to inform he has rejected a ‘dizzying’ offer from Tottenham.
El Confidencial provides background on the efforts made by the north London side to bring the former Real Madrid manager to the club.
It’s claimed the Spaniard received a call from the Premier League club earlier this month, and Daniel Levy was willing to pay the €5m clause to take him away from Sevilla.
Lopetegui earns less than €3m net per year with his current employer, and Tottenham were ‘willing to substantially improve’ his salary. ‘Money was no problem’ for Levy and the English club.
The Spurs chief ‘went all out for Lopetegui and offered him the best salary he can earn in his career’. The salary proposal was higher than what he earned at Real Madrid [€6m per season], but the 54-year-old ‘turned down’ the offer.
In order to avoid confusion and chaos, the Sevilla manager called Monchi and the club president to explain that he had rejected Tottenham’s offer, before it was leaked to the media.
Levy’s plan to tempt Lopetegui with a better financial package hasn’t yielded results as the Tottenham supremo failed in his efforts to convince the Sevilla coach.
