Ever since Luis Enrique announced he would be stepping down as Barcelona’s manager at the end of the season, there have been numerous articles about who could replace him.
The main man being touted in Italy has been Tottenham’s Mauricio Pochettino due to his attractive football and La Liga experience, and the fact he speaks Spanish.
Gazzetta dello Sport do exactly that on Friday, and they suggest the search is already under way at White Hart Lane, with Daniel Levy already adding a very interesting option on his list.
That man is Roma’s Luciano Spalletti, whose contract at Roma ends once the current campaign comes to an end, and bringing the Italian in would help a smooth transition, something the Spurs chairman would be keen to do following his side’s recent success under the Argentinean.
Furthermore, Spalletti would be keen to give managing in England a try, and with his philosophy ‘in line with Pochettino’s’, the players wouldn’t have to adapt too much.
It makes sense, but for this to happen, Pochettino would have to leave if Barcelona came calling, and there’s no guarantee that would happen considering he recently signed a new deal until 2021 with the London side.
The La Liga side would likely have to pay a hefty premium, and with other candidates available who suit their philosophy, they’re much likelier to look elsewhere.
