Atlético Madrid’s Conor Gallagher is on his way to join Tottenham Hotspur in the winter market.
At the weekend, claims from Spain reported Aston Villa would need €30m to sign him. Two days ago, they made advances to take the midfielder on loan with a purchase option. This was before Tottenham stepped in.
On Tuesday, AS reported the 25-year-old will travel to England to complete his transfer to Tottenham. They are signing him on permanent transfer by offering €40m to Atlético and proposing better terms to the player.
Later that day, Cadena Ser reported Atlético sporting director Mateu Alemany had spent a few days in Birmingham over the past week.
His efforts to convince Unai Emery’s side to spend €40m weren’t successful and it opened the door for Tottenham. Alemany then reached a quick agreement with Thomas Frank’s side for a permanent sale. Wednesday’s edition of Marca picks up on that and covers the latest.
Alemany masterminds double transfers
Diego Simeone’s side will collect €62m from the sales of Gallagher and Giacomo Raspadori to Spurs and Atalanta respectively. Tottenham overcame competition from Aston Villa to win the ‘bidding war’ for the former Chelsea man.
Alemany was able to carry out ‘two lightning-fast’ operations that will see Los Rojiblancos raise around €62m. These funds can be used to try and improve their squad in January.
Another Spanish newspaper, ABC, state Atlético are finalising Gallagher and Raspadori’s exits.
Tottenham move seen as almost done
Simeone didn’t include the England international and Raspadori in Atlético Madrid’s squad for the Copa del Rey clash against Deportivo de La Coruña on Tuesday. This clearly indicates the duo are on the way out.
According to ABC, Gallagher and the 25-year-old Italian are living their last few hours as Atlético players.
In short, it’s only a matter of time until Tottenham complete the Englishman’s signing, which the transfer seen as almost done in Spain.
