Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero

Cristian Romero has become a decisive figure at Tottenham Hotspur over the past few months. His exit from the club is now increasingly a possibility in the summer.

The Argentine has also popped up with negative contributions in recent months for Spurs. Against Nottingham Forest, he was criticised for a costly error that led to the opposition’s second goal. This happened during a critical match and at a vital point of it.

That has become a pattern of the season for the defender and his colleagues. Romero is one of those to have picked up various suspensions across the campaign.

His brashness has also come under the microscope, even if his ability has never really been in question.

Sport Witness have covered talk of a possible switch to Atletico Madrid, claims which have been around for over a year. Now, the idea of a return to the Serie A is also gaining traction.

Roma, Napoli and Inter interested

Journalist Armando Areniello has now reported on Cristian Romero’s future at Tottenham. He clarifies that Inter Milan, AS Roma and Napoli are all interested in the Argentina international.

Areniello believes – in worss via AreaNapoli – that ‘Tottenham value him at €50-60m’, especially considering that his contract runs out in 2029.

The deal is likely to be complex for the Italian sides, who aren’t always blessed with financial resources. Romero has played at Genoa and Atalanta (on loan from Juventus) but his value might be well beyond Serie A clubs right now.

Spain seems likelier destination

On top of that, it does seem like the journalist is underestimating Tottenham’s price tag. Since Romero has a long-term deal and is club captain, they are unlikely to let him leave for cheap.

Even if they do get relegated, they would still be able to command a high fee. Pressure would be on, especially with players having to take pay cuts, but Spurs would push higher.

That is why Italian sides should be on the peripheries for his signature. The player has already impressed in Serie A, having also made an impact in the Champions League at Atalanta.

Atletico Madrid are more used to shelling out big money on players, with the defender also having expressed a desire to move to Spain. All that should make Los Rojiblancos the favourites to sign the 27-year-old.

The club has a good record of signing Argentina internationals. There’s also the presence of Diego Simeone. Therefore, should Cristian Romero be leaving Tottenham in the summer then it’s difficult to see Serie A as a likely destination.
