Desperately looking for a new defender before the start of the season, AS Roma in Italy are looking all around Europe for someone that fits their requirements.

With Mamadou Sakho’s situation at Liverpool unclear, the Serie A side are seeing if that becomes a viable option, meaning they’ve put a couple of other dossiers on ‘standby’ for now.

Corriere dello Sport claim that one of those is Tottenham’s Federico Fazio, with Real Madrid’s Nacho being the other.

We might be reading a bit too much into this, but Corriere describe the two as ‘solutions’, suggesting a deal could happen fairly easily if the Sakho route didn’t produce any results.

The Argentinean defender has been out of Mauricio Pochettino’s plans for quite some time, with the Tottenham manager making it clear the centre-back needed to find a new club, which has proved a bit more difficult than first thought.

A potential loan to Espanyol in Spain seemed like a decent move for the former Sevilla star, but the La Liga club’s terms didn’t seem to thrill Spurs all that much.

Fazio spent the second half of last season on loan at Sevilla, making six appearances and picking up one red card (on his debut) in the process.

Tuttomercatoweb said over the weekend that Fazio had agreed to join Roma, but we’re still doubtful about how strong the interest is. Sakho and Nacho both fit the ‘versatile defender’ mould which Roma are working towards, Fazio does not.
