Italy’s performance in their 2-0 loss to Switzerland, which saw them exit Euro 2024, was perhaps one of the worst at the tournament so far.
There’s was so little fight, and the character which has for years been evident in the Italian defence, and which drove them to winning the last Euros, just wasn’t there.
One of the reasons was the suspension of Riccardo Calafiori, who despite being 22-years-of-age is showing the mentality and strength needed to play in defence for Italy.
He’s been linked with multiple Premier League clubs, with Tottenham pushed forward the most, and Monday’s Gazzetta dello Sport has a look at the station.
The say the Bologna player is worth more than €40m, and his club want to keep hold of him beyond this summer. However, there’s ‘danger’ coming from the Premier League, where Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham are credited with interest.
Juventus have been linked but it’s not thought they’d meet the finances required, so it’s ‘English shocks’ which could take Calafiori away.
Tottenham are singled out because they’ve been sniffing around him since January, although perhaps Spurs were keener on the potential €25m transfer fee then too!
Calafiori can play in central defence or at left back. Tottenham Hotspur genuinely jumping in could well depend on someone else leaving.
