Tottenham Hotspur will need to spend over €100m to sign Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United this summer.
Tuttomercatoweb report that the 26-year-old is ‘working with his team’ on a transfer this summer. It’s worth listening to TMW on this because they speak to Tonali’s agent, Giuseppe Riso, at least on a weekly basis.
Tonali wants to leave Newcastle
According to the website’s information, Newcastle’s poor finish last season has prompted Sandro Tonali to ‘reconsider’ his future. He’s pushing for a transfer.
But given the costs of the potential operation, it would only be possible to move in the Premier league if four or five top clubs from around Europe get involved.
Roberto de Zerbi’s Tottenham have emerged in the last few hours. Manchester United, Manchester United and Arsenal are ‘also making moves’.
The asking price is the major roadblock. Newcastle have made it clear that they won’t accept offers below €100m. Tonali will also require a ‘very significant’ salary to be added to that. He already earns around €10m net per season including bonuses.
All in, he’s a ‘decidedly expensive’ transfer to say the least. But it’s not seen as impossible by any of the suitors, including Tottenham.
Any move would also put Tonali back at the top of the most expensive Italian transfers of all time. He’s currently second on €58.9m behind Mateo Retegui, who cost €68.5m.
Tottenham questions
The question is whether Tottenham can afford such a deal. They appear determined to spend big for Roberto de Zerbi this summer to completely reshape the Italian’s squad.
But two years without Champions League football will undoubtedly have hit their finances hard. Never mind two consecutive 17th placed finishes in the Premier League.
The question is also whether Sandro Tonali is willing to swap Newcastle for Tottenham. Afterall, he’s seemingly determined to leave the Magpies because they’ve failed to secure European football. Why then would he swap them for another team who have done the same?
Either way, TMW insist that the transfer is possible and Tottenham are among the suitors despite the big prices involved.
