On January 13th, Record explained Tottenham Hotspur have scheduled a meeting with Sporting this week to discuss the transfer of Pedro Porro.
A Bola now claim that meeting ‘took place yesterday’ and which Spurs are ‘very far’ from meeting the Eagles’ demands to sanction the player’s transfer.
Sporting are firm and have asked Tottenham to pay the right-back’s €45m clause, but they are still a long way from meeting it.
Antonio Conte is an admirer of the 23-year-old and with two weeks left in the market, the newspaper states there is a possibility for Spurs to return for the Spaniard. Chelsea are also in the mix, but their London rivals are the most committed team to sign Porro.
Tottenham advanced the negotiations on Monday but were not able to find an agreement with the Portuguese club, with their president, Frederico Varandas, leading the talks.
With Spurs ‘very far’ from meeting Sporting’s asking price, Porro, for now, will continue at the club.
Tottenham were at a similar situation with Sporting when they were negotiating a deal for Bruno Fernandes in the summer of 2019. They wanted to pay €45m plus an additional €20m if Spurs were to win the Premier League and the Champions League.
This was confirmed by Varandas in 2019, who said: “The only serious proposal, which was still only verbal, was a €45m bid from Tottenham for Bruno Fernandes, plus €20m in goals.
“Twenty million in goals which were about Tottenham becoming the Premier League winners, which they never were, and winning the Champions League, which has also never happened. So I found these goals extremely imposs…. difficult to accomplish. And I understood not to sell Bruno.”
Should Spurs fail to land Porro in January, Varandas could shed light on the efforts made by them for the right-back.
Sporting seem to have been tougher on their player’s clauses ever since they were forced to sell Eric Dier for €5m, to Tottenham in 2014.
