Despite all their efforts to sign Cristian Romero from Atalanta, Tottenham haven’t given up in their attempts to sign Takehiro Tomiyasu from Bologna.

That was made clear on Friday when Calciomercato.it reported Spurs were getting ‘closer and closer’ to signing the Japan international, having upped their offer, reaching an ‘agreement in principle’ in the process.

The player is currently with the Japan Olympics squad in Tokyo, which makes anything beyond talks between the two clubs a bit more difficult, and Corriere di Bologna on Sunday explained the club ‘would need to wait for the end’ of his commitments abroad ‘to close the sale’.

Tottenham were said to have ‘taken another step’ in the right direction to acquire the versatile defender’s services, but also warned that buying Romero would give Atalanta the extra money needed to provide Spurs with more competition.

It’s a risk Fabio Paratici is seemingly willing to take, even without Champions League football under his belt, and we’ll have to see if the lure of the Premier League is stronger than that of a stay in Serie A, but with better European football on offer.
