Tottenham Hotspur are now seen as serious candidates to sign Empoli goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, according to reports from Italy.
Following the 26-year-old’s impressive season in Serie A, he’s been linked to several Premier League clubs, and it seems it’s now Spurs who lead the competition for him.
That’s today said at Sport Italia’s SICafé show, where journalist Michele Criscitiello talked about the race for Vicario. He claims Tottenham came in strong for his signing, although that may depend on another chain of events.
“Inter will probably sell Onana. There is talk of big money with Chelsea,” said Criscitiello.
“The Nerazzurri had Vicario in their grasp, but now they are wasting time and as a result Tottenham have swooped in strongly on the goalkeeper in these hours, with important money, at Corsi’s house. Empoli are negotiating with the English, I don’t know the figures.”
In the past few weeks, we’ve been seeing Vicario mostly linked to the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea, as it had been over a month since Tottenham’s interest was last commented by the Italian media.
Last summer, the goalkeeper returned to Empoli after a loan at Cagliari. In his comeback to his club, he made 32 appearances, with 41 goals conceded and seven clean sheets.
SportItalia’s story doesn’t say how much would Tottenham need to spend to sign him from the Serie A side. His transfer value on Transfermarkt has only been going up, and currently stands at €15m as the club look to replace Hugo Lloris.
