Tottenham defender Cuti Romero has joked he hopes to see Newcastle United star Miguel Álmiron slacken off in the coming months as they both battle for a top four spot.
Newcastle and Tottenham are currently one of several sides battling to get into the Champions League places this season, with the race for the top four a hotly contested one.
The Magpies currently occupy fourth place but only sit one point ahead of Tottenham, whose 4-1 defeat to Leicester on Saturday opened up the chance for Eddie Howe’s side to widen the gap.
Indeed, they also have a game in hand over Antonio Conte’s side, meaning the momentum is very much in their hands at this moment in time.
They have gotten to that position thanks to the performances of Álmiron this season, with the Paraguayan in superb form, scoring nine and assisting one in 21 Premier League games so far.
That is by far his best tally since arriving in England but Romero is hoping the Newcastle man doesn’t add more to his total as he and his Spurs teammates try to chase the Magpies down.
“Newcastle are fighting for Champions League places,” he told Paraguay’s La Nacion.
“I always watch the Newcastle games and he (Álmiron) is in a very good moment. You can tell he’s a great player and let’s hope he slackens off a bit and we go up.”
