Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero has a clause in his contract to allow him to join Atlético Madrid for €60m, €10m less than Spurs value him at.

Marca report that Romero negotiated for the inclusion of the clause when he signed his last contract extension. That happened last summer, after endless claims regarding a transfer to Los Rojiblancos.

The newspaper explains that Atlético haven’t given up on Romero after trying to sign him last summer. In fact, he is once again the top target for the defence ahead of next season.

Romero doing his part

The transfer is seen as difficult, but Cristian Romero is doing his part to make it happen. In fact, he’s been doing his best to make a deal possible for a while. That includes negotiating a clause in his last Tottenham extension, at least as far as Marca are concerned.

That deal, signed in August, came after Atlético refused to pay Tottenham’s €55m demands for the striker. The 27-year-old, disappointed by that, accepting the ‘staggering’ renewal offer instead. But he kept an ‘ace up his sleeve’.

Aware that Tottenham value him at €70m, he included a special clause in his contract for Atlético set at €60m. While still a high figure, it’s a demonstration of his willingness to join Los Rojiblancos.

Real Madrid aware

There’s a statement from Marca that the clause also includes La Liga’s two giants, which would be Real Madrid and Barcelona. Real Madrid are aware of the situation, but his hints to Atlético have been constant and noted.

The last of those came during the recent meeting in the Champions League. Romero refused to be definitive about his Tottenham future to the media after that game.

But behind closed doors he took the opportunity to chat with Atlético’s Argentine players, who he plays with on the international stage. That was a demonstration of how well he could integrate at Atlético.

That’s something Atlético sporting director Mateu Alemany will have to consider if the option arises. He will also wait to see if Tottenham are relegated, which could change the situation considerably.

It would certainly open the doors wider and potentially bring in competition. They, though, won’t have the special clause that Romero has negotiated for Atlético.
