For years the Danish coverage of Tottenham’s Christian Eriksen has been roughly: ‘Oh, isn’t he playing well for Tottenham. That’s great, it’s a shame the national team isn’t able to get those performances out of him.’
Some have blamed Eriksen, some have blamed the national team management, and many have simply accepted that he’s surrounded by much better players at Tottenham and is therefore able to shine more.
However, what isn’t supposed to be in the script is Eriksen not actually playing well for Tottenham. That’s what happened on Wednesday at Wembley, as Spurs lost 1-0 to Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen.
Danish newspaper BT have a feature on Eriksen’s performance and headline it ‘total letdown’.
They go on to say Tottenham’s attack simply looked too blunt, and as Eriksen is supposed to be the ‘architect’ of that, then it’s not great for him.
BT fret that Eriksen’s place for Tottenham is increasingly in danger, after a disappointing period since signing his new contract.
Things can change very quickly indeed, Eriksen will hope they do.
