The closer we get to the January transfer window, the more Christian Eriksen’s name is going to pop up.
In case you weren’t already aware, the Danish midfielder’s contract expires next summer, and there is plenty of interest in his services.
Real Madrid are a possibility, while Bayern Munich are also being touted as another potential destination.
The latter suggestion was shot down by Bayern legend Lothar Matthäus this week, with the German suggesting that if Eriksen wasn’t good enough for Tottenham, then he wasn’t good enough for the German champions.
Stig Tøfting is having none of that, though, and believes that if Eriksen were to leave Spurs, Bayern is the better fit.
“I’d rather see Christian at Bayern Munich,” he told Sport 1.
“For Real Madrid, he would have to sell a huge number of jerseys, and he’s not such a glamour boy.
“In Madrid, a powerful man sits at the calculator, thinking ‘how much does Eriksen cost and how many jerseys can he sell?’
“Christian is not the big superstar, he’s not big-gestured, he doesn’t want to be the centre of attention, he’s not a Pogba, he’s very introverted and down to earth. He lets his feet speak.”
He then stated that, compared to Real Madrid, a move to Bayern would allow Eriksen to ‘only play football’ and Tøfting speculated the midfielder is ‘already preoccupied’ about the Bundesliga champions hovering, as every Danish footballer would be ‘proud of an interest from Munich’.
Should Eriksen want to secure himself a move to a big side next summer, he’ll have to start performing on the pitch this season first.
The Dane is yet to get going, with his drop in form coinciding with Tottenham’s struggles on the pitch.
Tøfting has absolutely no doubt about the quality of his compatriot, though, and instead thinks the links to Real Madrid in the summer have caused an issue.
“For me, Christian is currently the best Danish player in the world, and he’s the biggest talent in Denmark since Michael Laudrup,” he added.
“Even if he does not catch a good day, he still plays at a high level, as he has repeatedly demonstrated at Tottenham.
“He’s not free in the head right now, but if Real deals with you, it does something to a player.”
Making his opinion absolutely clear, Tøfting ended by saying: “I think he would decide for Bayern, which he fits like an a*** in a bucket.”
