Tottenham Hotspur star Cristian Romero is back on Atlético Madrid’s transfer agenda.
Last summer, the La Liga side showed interest in the defender and Diego Simeone had publicly expressed his desire to sign him.
At that time, he said: “As an Argentine fan, I admire his personality, his playing style, and his defensive work. As an Argentine fan who has seen more of his matches than Tottenham’s, I am a great admirer of his.”
Los Rojiblancos made multiple approaches, but Tottenham refused to sell him. In August 2025, the Premier League side renewed his contract until 2029.
In March, the Argentina international left the door open to leave the north London club this summer. Since then, there’s been multiple claims linking him to different clubs.
Tottenham player market opportunity for Atlético
Wednesday’s edition of Mundo Deportivo points out the Spanish giants’ failure to sign him last summer.
Diego Simeone’s side had approached Spurs on two occasions and received a ‘resounding no’. In short, there was a firm rejection from the English club.

With a contract until 2029, Transfermarkt value Cristian Romero at €45m. He has started both matches for Argentina at the World Cup.
Taking the defender’s contract, performances, experience and age into account, it’s highly unlikely that Spurs will sell him for €30m.
