Late on in the January transfer window, Tottenham surprised a few by going after Gerard Deulofeu, currently contracted to Udinese.
The Spaniard is a player who knows the Premier League well from his stints at Watford and Everton, and would have immediately brought some pace and experience to Antonio Conte’s side.
In fact, it was even reported after the market closed that a deal with Tottenham had been all but completed until the player injured himself and had to undergo surgery, which cancelled everything.
This is recalled by Mundo Udinese, who look at the winger’s situation and recall that he had ‘lots of suitors’ before his knee issues.
They state that Tottenham ‘had even closed the deal’ for a transfer back to the Premier League before the injury, and it ‘cannot be ruled out that they could return’ in the summer window.
Should that be the case, ‘it will be difficult for Udinese to say no’ given they are currently faced with a surplus of attacking players, and the money on offer is likely to be quite appealing.
Whether Tottenham do come back remains to be seen, and a lot could rest on whether Conte continues to be their manager next year, as his future is also currently up in the air.
