Tottenham Hotspur are working on launching an attempt to sign Liverpool‘s Cody Gakpo this summer.
On June 5th, Sport Witness covered claims from the Dutch press of Spurs interest in the forward. Roberto De Zerbi wants him to be part of his rebuild at the Premier League side.
Later that month, we relayed news the 27-year-old has told Liverpool that he wants to leave, and Tottenham are waiting for him.
De Zerbi recently told the British press that the north London club have completed 60% of their business. He also revealed his side are working on “another bomba”.
Tottenham want to make advances
Soccer News journalist Mounir Boualin covered these two reports in June. Fast forward to August and he took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share an important update on Spurs’ pursuit.
The latest claims elsewhere have reported Tottenham Hotspur’s plan to intensify talks with Liverpool for the Netherlands international.
Boualin relays this and then points out the north London club have been keen on Cody Gakpo since June.
He adds Roberto De Zerbi’s side are ‘internally preparing a bid’ to take him away from Liverpool.
The journalist doesn’t mention the fee Spurs are willing to offer or the Reds’ stance on letting him leave.
Liverpool in strong position
The former PSV Eindhoven man starred for the Reds in their title winning campaign during the 2024/25 season.
He managed 18 goals and seven assists, and a year ago, Liverpool rewarded him with a new contract until 2030. However, Cody Gakpo managed only nine goals and six assists last season. Transfermarkt now value him at €60m.
Despite the Dutchman’s desire to leave, his contract puts Liverpool in a strong position to fend off Tottenham Hotspur.
If he were to push for a transfer, Andoni Iraola’s side are likely to demand a fee over €60m. It’ll be interesting to see how this case develops.
