Tottenham may still hope to keep João Palhinha. However, reports from Portugal suggest one major part of Sporting’s plan is now almost complete.
For weeks, the story has revolved around whether the midfielder would be willing to make the sacrifices needed to return to Lisbon.
According to A Bola, that question is now close to being answered.
The Portuguese newspaper reports Sporting and Palhinha are “practically” in agreement over the personal terms of a return to Alvalade, following fresh progress in talks over recent days.
Previous reports focused on the player’s desire to return, his willingness to lower his salary and Sporting’s attempts to persuade him. But seems like that is already resolved. Now the discussion is moving towards the clubs involved.
Attention turning towards Bayern
A Bola explain Sporting believe the first major obstacle is close to being overcome. The second one may prove much harder.
The Portuguese side must now find a way to convince Bayern Munich to facilitate a deal for a player they signed from Fulham for more than €50m (£43m) in 2024.
That financial reality remains the biggest challenge facing Sporting. The report states the Lisbon club have already started working on what is described as a financial structure. Also, this structure should be capable of bringing Bayern to the table.
A loan with an option to buy remains Sporting’s preferred solution. It continues to be viewed internally as the most realistic route.
Importantly, A Bola report that initial steps have already been taken in discussions aimed at finding common ground with the German club.
Transfer story entering new phase – far from London
The player’s side of the equation is described as being close to resolution. And as the details between João Palhinha looks settled, the spotlight is shifting towards Bayern and the mechanics of a potential deal.
That does not make the operation easy. Far from it actually. If the latest reports are accurate, Sporting will now face the much tougher task of convincing Bayern.
And that may ultimately be the negotiation that decides Palhinha’s future. But as things currently stand, the safest conclusion is that João Palhinha is unlikely to remain at Tottenham next season.
