On June 14th, AS stated Tottenham Hotspur’s Pierre-Emile Højbjerg isn’t the main target for Atlético Madrid, who are favouring Celtic’s Matt O’Riley to bolster their midfield. It was also said they’ll move to take O’Riley away from Brendan Rodgers’ side if needed this summer.
Atlético seem to have now changed their stance over the Celtic star and the Tottenham player if Monday’s edition of Mundo Deportivo is to be believed.
The Madrid club showed interest in Mats Wieffer, but he left Feyenoord and completed a move to Brighton & Hove Albion.
This could see Diego Simone’s side shift their focus to the 23-year-old’s compatriot, who has a year left on his deal at Tottenham.
It’s claimed the 28-year-old midfielder seems ‘destined to be the best possibility’ for the Spanish club because Tottenham are open to selling him. The newspaper adds it ‘would not be crazy’ for Atlético to sign Højbjerg, indicating the fee wouldn’t be a lot for Simeone’s side.
Mundo add AS Monaco’s Youssouf Fofana and Real Madrid’s Dani Ceballos are on Atlético’s agenda, but the Spurs player seems to be the ‘best possibility’ as of now.
