The Pau Lopez to Tottenham saga continues, but things aren’t exactly going in the right direction.
On Thursday, Marca and Mundo Deportivo seemed to disagree with Sport that a deal for the player was close to completion, and Friday’s edition of the first mentioned makes it clear Espanyol aren’t keen to sell.
Bought by a Chinese car-making company halfway through last season, the La Liga club aren’t in desperate need of money, meaning the sale of Pau Lopez isn’t a priority.
Tottenham’s interest remains consistent, but Espanyol have now apparently said no to the €500k loan with a view to buy at €7m and Quique Sanchez Flores’ new club would rather a full transfer for more money now, as suggested by the headline “No More Presents”.
With no contacts in ‘the last few hours’, their aim is to increase the price as much as possible.
Despite all of this, Marca remain confident an exit will happen sometime next week, mostly because the player, who would be keen to stay and establish himself at Espanyol if given the choice, knows the arrival of Eduardo from Olympiakos is a hindrance to his goal.
Espanyol know their player could have a long and great career in the Premier League if given the chance to play, and so does Mauricio Pochettino, who knows the player well from his time as Espanyol manager.
The Spanish press’ stance remains the same for now: no deal, but one is probably around the corner.
