Tottenham are ‘not giving up’ on a permanent deal for Barcelona’s Clement Lenglet despite public farewells to the player yesterday.
That’s according to Mundo Deportivo, who say Spurs are still working on a permanent deal for the Frenchman despite not hinting as such in squad announcements this week.
The newspaper explains that Barcelona are ‘working against the clock’ to get rid of Lenglet permanently as that was a key component of the viability plan they submitted to La Liga.
In order to make new signings and register new contracts for key players Gavi and Ronald Araujo, they need to release Lenglet and Samuel Umtiti from their books.
They’re not part of the club’s plans despite having deals until 2026 and despite both returning from loan deals, their presence is ‘merely testimonial’.
Barcelona are working flat out to get them out on a permanent basis so they can get their wages off the books and balance the finances.
They want to send Lenglet to Tottenham and despite the Premier League side saying goodbye to the player publicly yesterday they are ‘not giving up’ on a deal.
Negotiations are underway with Barcelona for a transfer and their intention is to ‘pay a minimum transfer fee’ in order to be able to afford the Frenchman’s high salary at the Nou Camp.
What that fee will be isn’t mentioned, although claims yesterday had it at €5m, and it is perhaps negotiations over that which are currently holding things up given Daniel Levy’s desire to save wherever he can when it comes to Tottenham transfers.
