Portuguese newspaper A Bola is back today with an update on Sporting’s chase for Vitória Guimarães winger Marcus Edrwards.
It’s now said the Lions are willing to raise their efforts to sign the English player in January, and could put €8m on the table.
When speaking of Edwards, there’s always a mention of Tottenham Hotspur, who are getting 50% of the transfer. And this time, there’s actually something new about their say in the move.
It’s claimed that back in the summer, when Sporting were already chasing Edwards, Spurs had put ‘no obstacles’ in the way of the move. And now, it’s believed the London side will keep the same stance, not getting involved in the talks.
Edwards left Tottenham for Vitória for free in 2019, with the clubs agreeing that each club would get half of the fee of a future move. That’s all that had been said so far, so it’s a little surprising to see now that the Premier League club have to approve this sale.
This isn’t explained in A Bola’s story, so we can only assume this is some kind of first refusal or priority clause that Spurs kept when letting him go.
The winger is currently protected by a €50m release clause, but is now likely to end up leaving his club for less than €10m.
