Under manager Marc Wilmots, Belgium’s national team took a really tough line on unfit players. Whereas many countries may be wary of calling injured players up, and agree with clubs that rest is probably better, Belgium took the exact opposite approach.

It’s caused tensions on several occasions, with Premier League clubs annoyed at players who have been injured going away on international duty, and then ones that were carrying a niggle coming back having put too much strain on it.

It’s uncertain if Roberto Martinez will go the same way, he’s certainly a different character to Wilmots. Belgium face matches against Bosnia Herzegovina at home, and then Gibraltar away. Both should be straightforward wins for the national team.

Tottenham have a special interest this time around, with Mousa Dembele going away to the Belgium squad whilst injured. Dembele has an ankle problem and didn’t take part in training on Monday, and it may have been considered better that he stayed with Tottenham and recovered there.

However, Martinez has said he’ll give the Tottenham midfielder until Wednesday to improve, and then have to make a decision on his participation.

Mauricio Pochettino and Tottenham will be waiting with interest.
