Pierre-Emile Højbjerg can leave Tottenham this summer and Atletico Madrid have made him a ‘central focal point’ for their transfer efforts.

That’s according to Ekstra Bladet, who say all signs point towards Højbjerg leaving Tottenham this summer as they rebuild under Ange Postecoglou.

They explain that after three years with Spurs, now seems the perfect time for the player to take up a new challenge with new surrounding and goals.

Tottenham need to sell this summer as the midfielder only has two years left on his contract and ‘must realise’ that his price will fall dramatically next summer if he were to be allowed to enter the final year of his contract.

Thus, they’ve made it clear that he can leave if the ‘price is right’ but at the moment they and Atletico are yet to settle on that figure.

Reports in Spain have the figure for him at close to €40m, a price the Spanish side are never going to pay for the player. If that drops considerably, to around €22m, they would be ready to ‘strike’.

The situation is firmly in Tottenham’s hands at this point. They know they need to sell, Højbjerg wants to leave, and Atletico are keen to bring him in to reinforce Diego Simeone’s squad.

As usual, though, it is a matter of price and at this moment in time their figure seems to be too high for the Spanish side to bite.
