The past week has seen Giovani Lo Celso struggle with a tough decision, which is whether or not to undergo surgery.

The Tottenham loanee, currently at Villarreal, injured himself against Athletic Club, and there was a lot of worry that he would miss the World Cup.

The player put off going under the knife in hope of still making the Argentina squad, but whatever slither of it he was still holding onto has now disappeared.

This comes courtesy of journalist César Luis Merlo, who took to Twitter to reveal that Villarreal ‘will issue a statement informing that, as a result of the injury’, the Tottenham man ‘will have to undergo surgery’.

Because of this scenario, the Argentina manager, Lionel Scaloni, ‘will rule him out’ of the World Cup squad.

It’s then added the Tottenham player ‘did everything to be there, but unfortunately it was not enough’, and he will have to watch his compatriots from home, cheering them on remotely.

Bought from Real Betis for €32m after an initial loan, Lo Celso has made 84 appearances for Tottenham over the years, scoring eight goals and assisting another six.

He then spent the second half of last season on loan at Villarreal, which was successful enough for them to want him back for another year.
