When he was bought from Real Madrid, there was hope that Sergio Reguilón would be the long-term solution at left-back for Tottenham.
That wasn’t to be the case, however, as the player, despite playing a fair bit, failed to convince Antonio Conte, who is currently the man in charge at Spurs.
He was then sent to Atlético Madrid on loan, where an injury hindered his beginnings back in Spain, and left him with a lot of work to do to get his career back on track.
That hasn’t worked out, as the Tottenham defender is now stuck at a club who don’t want to keep him and set to return to London, where they aren’t interested in having him either.
This is what Estadio Deportivo point out on Monday, explaining that Reguilón has gone from ‘being one of the most sought-after left-backs on the scene to being condemned to ostracism’.
He is currently living ‘one of the hardest moments of his career’, as Atlético Madrid and Tottenham ‘do not count on him’.
That means he ‘will have to look for a new team in the summer’, as his recovery from the groin injury ‘has not gone as expected’.
In fact, at Atlético Madrid, they have ‘lost all hope that he is the player they need’, and while there are months left in the season for him to convince both clubs otherwise, it’s believed he will ‘hardly play’.
That’s an opening for Sevilla, who tried to bring him back last summer, but their interest then shows how fondly he is remembered there, and if there is a cheap deal to be done, like the one for Bryan Gil, then you can expect Monchi to be one of the first to pick up his phone and ring Daniel Levy.
