Out of contract at Tottenham at the end of the season, Eric Dier was still able to be loaned to Bayern Munich during the January transfer window in a deal that could see the Bavarians keep him for longer and pay Spurs a fee.
He was a request from Thomas Tuchel, who has since announced he will be leaving the club at the end of the season, putting the future of the England international in doubt.
A future at Tottenham seems out of the question, and with Bayern Munich, according to Bild, not fully convinced of making the move a permanent one just yet, there is a strong chance the 30-year-old finds himself a free agent in the coming months.
The German outlet look at what the future could hold for a number of players in the Bundesliga giants’ squad, and discuss the versatile defender.
They say he ‘needs to show he’s more than just a solid backup’, because if he doesn’t, it would be ‘difficult’ for Bayern Munich to ‘plan permanently’ with him.
The Tottenham loanee does have a plus point up his sleeve, though, and that is his friendship with Harry Kane, who made the move from Spurs last summer in a very expensive deal.
Considering the investment, it might be in Bayern Munich’s best interest to keep him happy, and if that means having Dier around, that could play in the defender’s favour.
