Following Napoli’s first bid to try and sign Wolverhampton Wanderers star Max Kilman, which was rejected, Tottenham were quickly said to also be in the race.
The interest from Spurs in the Wolves player was nothing new, and it did feel a bit like the old stories were being brought back up to make everything sound a bit more interesting.
However, Corriere dello Sport bring a bit more to the table on Thursday in their print edition, explaining that Daniel Levy is up to his usual tricks in the battle for the towering centre-back.
Wolves are ‘hoping for an auction’ to kick off between both Tottenham and Napoli for their player so they can ‘get the most out of the transfer’, especially since they have to give a percentage of future proceedings to Kilman’s former side, Maidenhead United.
As things stand, the €40m asking price is ‘considered excessive’ by the Naples side, who initially bid €35m, while Spurs are ‘also looking for a discount’.
In fact, Tottenham ‘do not intend to sink the blow’ for the Wolves player at this moment in time, perhaps waiting to see what happens with Micky van de Ven first, as Ange Postecoglou tries to put his defence in shape ahead of his first season in charge.
Down Napoli’s end, they are hoping that the Champions League football they have to offer could work in their favour, with Spurs completely out of Europe next season.
