Tottenham will have to improve on Fulham’s €25m bid for Brazilian defender Morato if they want to get him out of Benfica in the January transfer window.
That’s according to A Bola, who cover recent reports that Tottenham have had the defender scouted and explain what it would take to get him.
The newspaper explains that recent reports in England have indicated that Tottenham have had the defender scouted on four occasions across November, leading to a growing belief that they could present a proposal for him.
According to those reports the Benfica star is a favourite of Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou, who revealed jokingly in his press conference yesterday that he had asked Santa Clause for a central defender in January.
They remind their readers that Fulham were also keen on Morato in the summer and presented an offer worth €25m, which was rejected outright by the Portuguese side.
They have the player tied to a deal until 2027 with a €100m release clause and allowing him to leave for a quarter of that value simply wasn’t in their plans.
It’s unlikely that has changed in the months since and if Tottenham are now keen, they’ll have to better that offer to get him.
What figure Benfica would be willing to accept isn’t mentioned but with Postecoglou publically admitting to wanting a defender, you can ensure it won’t be a low one.
