LONDON, ENGLAND – NOVEMBER 10, 2018: Toby Alderweireld of Tottenham pictured during the 2018/19 Premier League game between Crystal Palace and Tottenham Hotspur at Selhurst Park.

Tottenham Hotspur favourite Toby Alderweireld has called for the club to carry out a ‘thorough clear-out’ this summer, regardless of what happens in their relegation battle.

ESPN Netherlands have an interview with the former defender this week. He’s less than impressed by what he’s seen from his old side.

Tottenham relegation battle

Tottenham are currently facing the stark reality of relegation from the Premier League as they sit 18th in the table.

Their defeat to Sunderland last weekend saw them drop into the bottom three for the first time, with West Ham United’s win on Friday seeing them leapfrog their London rivals.

Roberto de Zerbi’s side remain without a win this year. Their last victorying the Premier League was a 2-1 win over Brentford on December 6th.

It’s a situation that few saw coming after Tottenham’s Europa League success last season. While they struggled in the league last season too, a spend of €265.6m this season supposed to rectify their problems.

Big signings such as Xavi Simons, Mohammed Kudus, Conor Gallagher, Mathys Tel and Kevin Danso have failed to hit the mark, though. And now Alderweireld wants to see a summer clear-out.

“The squad really needs a ‘thorough clear-out’,” he said.

“This season reveals what kind of mettle the players are truly made of. Furthermore, you need to have a clear vision. Give a manager time and ensure that the playing personnel improves.

“Otherwise, you’ll find yourself in the exact same situation again next year. It’s going to be very difficult regardless. Honestly, when you watch them play, you don’t give them much of a chance.”

Big sales likely

Even if Tottenham avoid relegation this season, a summer exodus seems likely this summer. There is a growing acceptance that the current squad isn’t up to scratch.

There’s also a growing dislike for the squad seeping through the fanbase. They would happily see the current group sold off and started again.

Now with fan favourites like Toby Alderweireld advocating for the same, it’s a sentiment that is likely to grow in the coming months.
