The improvement shown by Giovani Lo Celso and Bryan Gil since leaving Tottenham in January could make things difficult for their suitors in the summer.
That’s according to Estadio Deportivo, who say the fact the pair are impressing out on loan ‘may make it difficult’ for Villarreal and Valencia to sign them again.
The Tottenham duo left London on loan in the January transfer window seeking regular playing time that wasn’t on offer under Antonio Conte.
They’ve both found that, and impressed too, with Gil now the star of the show at Valencia and Lo Celso shining under Unai Emery in La Liga and the Champions League alike.
Their performances have not gone unnoticed by Tottenham, with Conte even praising the pair and insisting they were never bad players in the first place.
Those comments suggest he and Tottenham will want to reassess their situations in the summer, and that’s bad news for their hopes of staying where they are.
Estadio say Spurs may want to ‘recover them’ come the summer transfer window or sell to clubs with ‘greater economic capacity’ than Villarreal and Valencia.
Both are currently on loan deals that don’t include an option to buy, so in principle, they will have to return to Tottenham in the summer.
Villarreal and Valencia are ‘keen to find a way’ to keep hold of them, but they will be trying to convince Tottenham to sell players with value rather than the struggling signings Lo Celso and Gil were before they departed.
In other words, the situation is trickier than it once was and the better the pair are between now and the end of the season, the worse it will get for the La Liga duo.
