Kalidou Koulibaly didn’t have the best second half of 2019, dropping from his usual very high standards.

It’s not too hard to believe a lot of that was down to Napoli’s erratic start to the season and the near-chaos around the Italian club. Results were poor, pressure mounted, and it all ended up with Carlo Ancelotti leaving Naples, who has since taken over at Everton.

Corriere del Mezzogiorno’s Campania edition (the area of which Naples is the capital) has an article saying the club need to recover the best version of Koulibaly, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t transfer interest… which is where Tottenham and Chelsea come in.

Media close to Napoli has repeatedly stated a €100m+ offer was rejected from Manchester United in the summer 2018 transfer window. They went on to sign Harry Maguire a year later and have moved on, but Tottenham and Chelsea are in ‘frequent contact’ with the defender’s entourage.

Given he’s their highest paid player, should the club not feel they can get Koulibaly back to his top form then the need to sell will become a serious consideration.

There’s no further claims from Corriere del Mezzogiorno, but it’s worth noting that if that Manchester United offer actually happened, it will have been when Jose Mourinho was in charge at the club.
