On May 31st, Mundo Deportivo said Atlético Madrid like Celtic’s Matt O’Riley, and that Brendan Rodgers’ side are open to negotiating his sale this summer. Tottenham Hotspur’s Pierre-Emile Højbjerg is also said to be on the La Liga side’s list.
Højbjerg, 28, has a year left on his deal at Spurs, and recent claims in the English press have stated he’s ‘very close’ to joining Atlético.
Friday’s edition of AS relays that and then shares their own information on Højbjerg and the Celtic player.
Los Rojiblancos were keen on signing the Tottenham man last summer and failed to take O’Riely away from Celtic in the winter market.
The report says Atlético like the Tottenham midfielder, but he isn’t their main target now. They currently prefer O’Riely and Feyenoord’s Mats Wieffer. This dismisses claims from the UK that the Tottenham player is very close to the Madrid club.
It’s claimed Brendan Rodgers’ side value their star at €21m while the Dutch press have said Wieffer is valued at €20m.
AS say the Feyenoord player is Atlético’s priority target and they can pay around €20m to secure his services.
Digeo Simeone’s side also like the Celtic star and may consider an approach for O’Riely if they can’t secure a deal for Wieffer.
In short, the Celtic midfielder is currently ahead of Højbjerg in Atlético’s target list.
