Despite some claims that Tottenham aren’t quite done with their attempts to sign Nicolo Zaniolo, Corriere dello Sport believe it’s over.
That’s because they make it clear that, as things stand, ‘there are no teams that can offer Roma €50m’, and that includes a potential loan with a mandatory option to buy next year.
Therefore, with Tottenham seemingly unwilling to pay that money, AS Roma are counting on their star for the current season, which José Mourinho has made clear is his wish going forward.
That doesn’t mean Spurs didn’t try, because we covered multiple reports suggesting offers were made and talks were held.
This is why Corriere dello Sport make a point of reporting on Monday that Tiago Pinto, AS Roma’s technical director, came ‘very close to closing the deal’ to sell Zaniolo to Tottenham.
However, it was ‘stopped by the Friedkin family’, who pulled the plug at the last minute.
This means that ‘barring twists and turns’, Zaniolo is ‘destined to remain’ in Rome, which leads to talks of a potential renewal down the line.
That doesn’t involve Tottenham, however, who might have seen their chance slip right through their fingers to sign the Italy international.
