Royal Antwerp star Arthur Vermeeren has not entertained an approach from Tottenham Hotspur, according to today’s Het Belang van Limburg.
The 18-year-old has two goals and six assists to his name from 32 games this season and has been one of the standout players for the Jupiler Pro League side.
His fine displays have seen him attract interest from several clubs and Tottenham are said to be one of them.
Atlético Madrid are edging closer to securing the midfielder’s services and this operation is about to be completed. HBVL mention Tottenham’s interest when providing details of the Belgium international’s impending move to Spain.
On Wednesday, Royal Antwerp sealed a win over OH Leuven in the Belgian Cup and the youngster was left out of the squad, to avoid jeopardising the €25m deal. He’s set to fly to Madrid today, to carry out transfer formalities to join Diego Simeone’s side.
The newspaper says he can pull the plug anytime but that would be surprising, especially because Vermeeren has turned down Spurs.
It’s said ‘Tottenham called’, but they were told the player wouldn’t go to England right now. He feels it’s ‘bit early’ to make a switch to the Premier League.
This would suggest Vermeeren has plans to move to England in the future and Atlético seem to be a stepping stone for him.
