Tottenham Hotspur’s attempts to pay a lower price for Pau Lopez than the €7m already agree are understandable, as we explained yesterday. There’s no harm in trying for a better deal and Spurs certainly wouldn’t be the first club to try and talk down an already agreed fee.

However, if Spain’s Gol are correct, Tottenham are going in very low indeed. It’s claimed that Spurs have proposed paying €3m. That amount is described as ‘miserly compared to the player’s value’, with it also being pointed Pau’s value will rise when he starts playing.

A sports director at Espanyol is quoted as saying: “I know that Pau Lopez is happy, we do not hear from Tottenham; They know what they have to do, they have to pay seven million and if so he will not be an Espanyol player. The option will not be lowered.”

A deal that looked so amicable last summer, helped by Mauricio Pochettino’s good connections at Espanyol, is now in danger of getting very messy indeed.

Pau Lopez arrived at Tottenham on a season long loan costing €600k, with a €7m option to make the move permanent. Should Spurs not use their option they must pay Espanyol a further €500k.
