Marca August 17thMarca report on Wednesday that Tottenham Hotspur have renewed their efforts to sign Pau Lopez from Espanyol. The Spanish newspaper explain that after an initial offer from Spurs was rejected a few weeks ago, the English club have now resumed contact.

This has happened in the ‘last hours’ and even though Marca don’t mention it, the link to Hugo Lloris’ hamstring injury is an obvious one. Whilst it would be unwise to throw 19 year old Pau straight into the Premier League, he could be a back-up to Michel Vorm if signed now.

Of course that presents the question of what to do with Vorm after then, and Lloris’ injury lay off is likely to go beyond the close of the window, meaning that Vorm would have to stay and play, or Pau be thrown in.

Pau is hardly going to be excited about being third choice, and the same is likely for Vorm. Whilst there’s an argument to say injury to Lloris makes Pau arriving more likely, it could equally be argued the other way.

Marca say a source close to Pau has confirmed talks are taking place, but says the clubs are far apart.

Tottenham’s first offer was €2m, and Espanyol were said to want €5m, which was then followed by claims yesterday that the Spanish club would ask for Pau’s €15m clause.

It’s worth trying the €5m.
