Liverpool’s Giovanni Leoni picked up a serious injury on his debut last month.

The defender impressed in a Carabao Cup game against Southampton. That was cut short by the knee issue, as the Italian was stretchered off in the second-half.

In Italy there’s obviously widespread concern about the 18-year-old and him getting an injury so early in his career. Those concerns have now been played down by Italian surgeon Vincenzo Costa.

Costa spoke to Calciomercato.it and was asked specifically about the Liverpool talent and concerns the injury could impact him long term.

He said: “It’s a cliché [fears about Leoni performing at his best]. Leoni will absolutely return to his best. There are top-level surgical techniques. There’s various staff monitoring the various rehabilitation and return-to-sport phases.”

Costa believes the Liverpool defender should be back to his best after injury.

“The players are much more attentive, informed, and precise, as I said.”

“From a biomechanics standpoint, after the surgery, there’s nothing that will prevent the knee from performing at 100%. So Leoni can certainly come back stronger than before.”

Since Leoni is still young, Liverpool should not be taking any risks regarding his return to action.

Aren Slot was already taking it slowly with the youngster, and will surely do so again with his fitness. Liverpool signed the Italian for his long term impact and in that regard not a lot has changed for the club.
