On December 2nd, Sky Deutschland reported Aston Villa have identified Borussia Mönchengladbach goalkeeper Moritz Nicolas as a candidate to replace Emiliano Martínez.

They also stated Nicolas is thinking about changing clubs even though he has a contract until 2029.

Two days later, claims from Germany backed up Aston Villa’s interest in the 28-year-old. It was also reported Gladbach sporting director Rouven Schröder is aware of the situation and is looking for alternatives.

Thursday’s edition of Rheinische Post has published an interview with the German, with Aston Villa interest mentioned.

The stopper is a product of the Bundesliga side’s academy and made his way into their first team in 2016. He was out on loan between 2019 and 2023.

Since return to Gladbach, Nicolas has enjoyed regular minutes, and he has kept seven clean sheets and conceded 27 goals from 17 matches this season.

Rheinische Post specifically asks the goalkeeper about his future plans after mentioning recent claims of Aston Villa’s interest.

“To be honest, that’s something I haven’t thought about at all, not even a little bit,” he said.

“What I can say is: I feel very comfortable at Borussia and I’m incredibly happy to be playing as the number one this season. I’ve been here for an extremely long time, ten years already, with breaks for loan spells. A real connection has developed over time.”

Diplomatic from Moritz Nicolas, but certainly not ruling Aston Villa or anyone else out.
