Everton midfielder Amadou Onana has insisted it was not a case of ‘missed opportunity’ for him this summer despite not sealing a move away from Goodison Park.
The Belgian midfielder has been speaking at a press conference as he links up with his nation for this international break, with Le Soir among those in attendance.
Onana had spent most of the summer being linked with a move away from Everton after an impressive debut season following a move from Lille last summer.
Both Chelsea and Manchester United had been credited with an interest at various points, with the latter at one point believed to be keen as they pressed to strengthen Erik ten Hag’s midfield.
Neither they or any other club made their move to sign him from Everton, though, and he remained with the club until the January transfer window at least.
The belief for some is that Onana may have been left slightly frustrated at that, having seen the opportunity to leave Everton, who are likely to be fighting relegation once again, for a club competing at the top pass him by.
He, though, has went out of his way to insist that isn’t the case and maintains he is more than happy where he is.
“It’s not at all a missed opportunity,” he said.
“Football is all about timing. You have to know how to seize opportunities when they present themselves.
“I had changed clubs every summer transfer window in recent seasons, but sometimes you have to know how to slow down and be patient. Now I am fully focused on my task with Everton.”
