Unfortunately, it appears the Alexandre Mendy dream is over.

For a month, the striker has been pushing for a move to Sunderland. Exactly a month ago, he spoke to the French press to tell them wanted to join the Championship club.

Despite having a more lucrative approach from Saudi Arabia, Mendy wanted the Black Cats, and he told the French media why. He’d watched every series of Sunderland ‘Til I Die and felt an appreciation for the fanbase and club in general.

Playing under Regis Le Bris was attractive to him, and he even said he couldn’t wait to travel to England with his family ahead of a Sunderland medical.

However, his current club SM Caen didn’t play ball. Mendy’s camp believe the Ligue 2 side have reneged on verbal assurances he could leave for a reasonable fee this summer.

When Caen signed a striker earlier this week it looked like that was the key for Mendy to be able to leave, but FootMercato say the dream has died.

Kylian Mbappe’s family became major Caen’s shareholders recently, just to add to the drama, and they’ve been blocking Mendy’s exit.

Now, he’s accepted he’s staying and wants some stability for his family, with his children set to return to school after the holidays.
