Hammarby manager Kalle Karlsson has told the Swedish media he’s been inspired by Kim Hellberg since he was appointed by Championship side Middlesbrough.

Kim Hellberg was installed as Middlesbrough manager in November after the departure of Rob Edwards to Wolverhampton Wanderers. The Swede has continued the progression made by the Welshman, with Boro currently second in the table.

Speaking to Fotboll Direkt, Kalle Karlsson was asked about the impact his compatriot has made since his arrival at the Riverside Stadium.

The Hammarby boss said Helleberg’s early success in England has been a positive for Swedish football. He believes it demonstrates Swedish coaches can achieve success abroad.

“It’s probably inspiring for all coaches in Swedish football to see that. This is big and the same when players do well abroad, it strengthens Swedish football. There have not been many Swedish coaches in history who have succeeded abroad.

“Sven is still the best example, but now we see more Swedish coaches abroad than before. This is a trend that we see. It’s become a little easier to get out now which is super fun,” said the Swede.

Middlesbrough fought off Swansea competition

Middlesbrough secured the services of Hellberg in November after Swansea City had initially moved for the manager. They went in strongly, clearly convinced of the impact Hellberg could have, and have been vindicated for having that confidence.

Boro club paid his former club Hammarby £250k in compensation in a protracted exit.

The 37-year-old hit the ground running, winning his first four games in charge and was named the Championship manager of the month in January.

His side currently sit in second place in the Championship and are on course to secure promotion to the Premier League.

Middlesbrough have lost one game in the last five league matches. They travel to QPR on Sunday as they target automatic promotion to the English top flight.
